Physiotherapy Questions, Answered
General Physiotherapy Questions
What is physiotherapy?
A healthcare profession focused on restoring movement and function to the body after injury, illness, or disability.
Do physiotherapists massage?
Yes, but it depends on your specific injury and treatment plan. Physiotherapists use soft tissue massage when it helps reduce muscle tension, relieve pain, or improve joint movement. However, unlike a relaxation massage at a spa, physiotherapy massage is highly targeted and used alongside other medical treatments, such as joint mobilisations and rehabilitation exercises, to cure the root cause of your problem. Targeted massage is an adjunct to treatment, not seen as a stand-alone cure for the injury.
Does physiotherapy hurt?
Treatment should not cause severe pain. You may feel mild discomfort or stretching sensations, but you should always tell your therapist if it hurts too much.
What techniques do therapists use?
They use a mix of manual therapy (hands-on mobilization), targeted exercises, education, and sometimes modalities like taping, cupping, or dry needling.
How long does each session last?
Initial assessments usually take 30 minutes. Follow-up sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes.
Your First Appointment
What happens during my first visit?
Your therapist will assess your posture, joint movement, and strength. They will then discuss your medical history to create a personalized treatment plan.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing. Loose shorts are best for leg injuries, and a tank top is ideal for neck or shoulder issues.
Do I need a doctor's referral, what about for ACC?
No, you do not need a doctor's referral to book a physiotherapy appointment - you can simply call our physiotherapy clinics directly to book. If your issue is an injury that qualifies for ACC funding, your physiotherapist can submit the application at your first appointment.
Recovery & Frequency
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
Soft tissue injuries often take 4 to 8 weeks to heal. Minor issues may take 2 to 3 sessions, while physio care for major post-surgery rehabilitation can take months.
How often do I need to see my physiotherapist?
Most patients start at 1 to 2 physio appointments per week. The frequency drops as your strength and function improves.
Why do I have to do exercises at home?
Clinic physiotherapy sessions only start the process. Doing your home exercises regularly is what builds long-term strength and prevents re-injury.
Costs, Insurance, & Cancellations
Do you accept health insurance or third-party funding?
Yes, we accept major health insurance providers. We can also assist with government or third-party accident compensation claims (such as ACC, WellNZ, Careway). We are able to assist with lodging claims with ACC or please provide your claim details when booking.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 24 hours' notice for any appointment cancellations or rescheduling. This allows us to offer the slot to patients on our waiting list. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may incur a cancellation fee.
